Embarking on a camping adventure in the Kilimanjaro Crater offers a unique and exhilarating experience for trekkers. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the route, assesses the difficulty level, discusses success rates, outlines a suggested itinerary, and shares expert tips to enhance your journey.

Whether you are a seasoned climber or a novice adventurer, understanding these key elements will help you prepare for an unforgettable expedition on Africa’s highest peak.

Kilimanjaro Crater Camping Overview

The extended version of the Northern Circuit route includes an additional two days dedicated to proper acclimatization before spending the night at Crater Camp. Located at an impressive altitude of 5,790 meters, this camp is the highest overnight accommodation available at the equator. Our team is committed to making your Kilimanjaro ascent both comfortable and unforgettable.

Only a fortunate few have the opportunity to witness the breathtaking night skies at this elevation, where the Kilimanjaro glaciers are beautifully illuminated against the backdrop of the Milky Way. While such high-altitude ascents come with inherent challenges, the Beyond Average Team possesses the expertise and equipment necessary to ensure your safety and well-being at Kilimanjaro Crater Camp. We look forward to guiding you on this extraordinary journey.

What is the Northern Circuit Route?

The Northern Circuit is one of the premier trekking routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, commencing on the western side of the mountain. This scenic path leads adventurers through the Shira Ridge and Plateau, traverses the northern slopes, ascends to the iconic Uhuru Peak, and concludes with a descent via the southern Mweka route.

How Long is the Northern Circuit Route?

The Northern Circuit is the longest route available for climbing Kilimanjaro, spanning approximately 88 kilometers (or 53 miles).

Duration of the Climb via the Northern Circuit Route

The standard itinerary for the Northern Circuit typically spans 8 days, excluding arrival and departure days. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, we also offer 9-day private expeditions, which can include an overnight stay in the Crater. This extended trek may incorporate an additional rest day, thereby enhancing your chances of reaching the summit.

Success Rate of the Northern Circuit Route

The summit success rate for the Northern Circuit route ranges from 80% to 90%. As with any Kilimanjaro route, adequate preparation is essential. Given that this is the longest route, it is particularly well-suited for hikers who are comfortable with longer daily treks and a more extended itinerary compared to other routes.

Cost of the Northern Circuit Trek

The cost for a Northern Circuit expedition generally starts at $2, 600 per person. This price may vary based on factors such as the specific itinerary, the season, the number of participants in a private expedition, and any additional premium services requested.

Embarking on the Northern Circuit route offers a unique and rewarding experience for those looking to conquer Kilimanjaro while enjoying breathtaking landscapes and a higher likelihood of summit success.

Hiking: 4-5 hours
Overnight Altitude ~9,498'

On the morning of Day 2, your guide and climbing support team will meet you at your hotel for a final briefing. Following this, you will embark on a scenic drive of approximately 3 to 4 hours to the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park, known as Londorossi Gate (2,250 m / 7,380 ft).

Upon arrival at the check-in gate, you will complete the necessary formalities, including acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service. Once these procedures are finalized, your group will commence the trek to your first campsite, Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m / 8,692 ft). It is advisable to bring raincoats or ponchos, as the trail traverses a dense tropical forest where heavy rainfall is common.

By the time you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, our professional mountain crew will have prepared everything you need for a comfortable stay, including pitching tents and preparing a delicious lunch. After enjoying your meal, you will embark on an acclimatization hike towards Shira 1 Camp, before returning to Mti Mkubwa for a hot dinner.

The acclimatization hike is a gentle trek with a slight elevation gain, designed to facilitate your body's adjustment to the altitude. It is crucial to take these acclimatization hikes seriously, as they significantly enhance your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and help mitigate the risks associated with altitude sickness.

As this marks your first day at this altitude, we strongly recommend that you adhere to the following guidelines moving forward:

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience at high altitudes, we recommend that you consume over 3 liters of bottled water daily, in small, frequent sips. This practice can help mitigate the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Additionally, consider using preventive measures such as high-altitude aid medications. Many experienced mountain climbers take these pills in the morning before their ascent to alleviate discomfort associated with altitude sickness. Our management team will provide you with specific details regarding these medications along with your travel itinerary. We also advise consulting your physician prior to your trip to discuss any potential allergies or health concerns.

This gradual elevation is essential for acclimatization, a crucial aspect of successfully reaching the Kilimanjaro Crater Camp. This segment of the journey presents a more demanding challenge compared to previous days, featuring a series of inclines and descents that may test your physical endurance. However, this trek serves as an excellent opportunity for acclimatization to the high altitude.

Lunch will be served at the summit of Lava Tower, where you will have 1-2 hours to rest and rejuvenate after the morning's exertions.

Post-lunch, you will ascend slightly before beginning a gradual descent towards Moir Hut. This campsite is strategically located on the route to the northern section of Kilimanjaro, providing a scenic and tranquil environment for your overnight stay.

On this day, you will embark on a trek to the School Hut Summit Camp, situated at an elevation of 4,800 meters (15,744 feet). The trek itself is relatively moderate, allowing you to maintain a comfortable pace that conserves your energy for the challenges ahead. Upon reaching the camp, we strongly advise prioritizing rest; refrain from engaging in strenuous activities and ensure you stay well-hydrated. Tomorrow, your group will venture into the crater, an experience that promises to be both exhilarating and demanding. Prepare accordingly to make the most of this remarkable journey.

Accommodation: Camping, sleeping pad included
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~ 18,865’

At approximately midnight, you will embark on your ascent from the camp, traversing the edge of the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, standing at an impressive 5,895 meters. Upon arrival at the summit, you will have the opportunity to spend 30 to 40 minutes capturing breathtaking photographs and witnessing a spectacular sunrise that stretches across the African landscape. For those inclined to explore, the nearby glaciers are just a short 30-minute walk from the peak, or you may choose to begin your descent to Crater Camp at your leisure.

Reaching the crater floor demands significant dedication, but the rewards are truly remarkable. As you arrive, you will be captivated by the ancient glaciers and pristine snow that adorn the landscape. If you wish, you can opt to continue your trek to the Ash Pit, which takes approximately 90 minutes, or you may decide to reserve this adventure for the following day.

Accommodation: Camping, sleeping pad included
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hiking time: 5-7 Hours
Overnight Altitude: 10,065’

On this day, you have the opportunity to make another summit attempt in the morning, depending on your overall condition. If you choose not to return to Uhuru Peak, you can begin your descent by hiking out of the crater to Barafu Camp, and then continue down the slope to Millennium Camp, your next overnight destination.

Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, you may wish to explore the Ash Pit—a warm, ice-free area within the crater that spans approximately 340 meters in diameter and is composed of lava gravel (if you did not visit it yesterday). The Ash Pit features striking whitish-yellow sulfur slopes that descend about 200 meters into the depths of the volcano. Along with the Reusch Crater that encircles the Ash Pit, Kilimanjaro boasts one of the most remarkable crater formations on Earth. Please note that the amount of snow present in the crater will influence your ability to access the Ash Pit.

On this final day of your journey, you will awaken in the serene surroundings of a tropical rainforest, where the air is fresh and invigorating. As you rise, you will experience a sense of relief from the altitude and a profound satisfaction from having successfully reached the summit.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, you will begin your descent towards Mweka Gate, located at an elevation of 1,640 meters (5,379 feet). Upon your arrival at the gate, the entire group will come together to celebrate your achievements. You will have the opportunity to share your reflections on the climb in our guestbook, allowing you to capture your thoughts and experiences.

To commemorate your remarkable journey, we will present you with your certificates in our office. Following this, we will arrange for your transfer back to the hotel, where you can relax and reflect on the incredible adventure you have just completed.
